Beaumont-Hamel sector, Battle of the Somme (1 July 1916). Members of the Newfoundland Regiment in the support trench on St. John’s Rd., 250 yards behind the front line. Soon after this photo was taken, they received orders to move forward; within 15 minutes of going over the top of the front line trench, 90% of the 750 men of the regiment were dead or wounded.
