The 90th minute comes and goes, and stoppage time begins to wind down. The pub is almost entirely silent Then, in the 92nd minute, Irish football icon Niall Quinn provides Robbie Keane with a serviceable ball inside the German box. Keane knocks the ball to the ground with his left shoulder, has a step, and deftly-finally—puts a ball past Kahn. Now I’m not Irish or even Irish-American, and I’ve never lived in Ireland, but this is one of the happiest moments of my life. The entire bar, indeed the entire nation, falls into an almost inhuman roar of disbelief, relief, and celebration. Pint glasses are knocked to the floor as the entire bar jumps up, and the sound of breaking glass is added to the jubilant cacophony already pouring from all directions. I’m hugging Pat! I’m hugging Joe! I met them only two hours ago!
It’s not Euro 88 vs. England, but still
